Sebaceous Cysts
Cysts are abnormalities in the body that may contain liquid or soft material. There are many different types of cysts. A sebaceous cyst is a commonly used term usually used to refer to epidermoid cysts or pilar cysts, both of which contain keratin. Epidermoid cysts originate in the epidermis and pilar cysts originate from hair follicles. True sebaceous cysts are more rare and these originate from sebaceous glands which contain sebum. These cysts are not harmful, however sometimes they can get infected or cause pain. We regularly remove cysts on many different areas of the body. Cyst removal operations are one of the most common operations that we perform.
COMMON SYMPTOMS

Drainage or infection
Redness or changes in skin color

COMMON TESTS
You may need lab work or imaging studies such as an ultrasound, MRI or CT scan before your operation.
Cyst REMOVAL SURGERY
An incision is made near the mass site and the mass is removed. The skin is closed with stitches or surgical glue. The operation usually takes less than an hour. Patients usually go home the same day of the operation.
